There is no better way to end a day on the road than parking up your motorhome in front of the sea, opening a paper of fresh-fried haddock, and watching the gulls plot their attack. Scotland is, frankly, world-class for fish and chips — the cold North Sea, the family-run shops, the dripping-fried tradition — and this guide plots the 12 best chippies for anyone touring the country in a campervan or motorhome in 2026.
We have driven every mile of this list. Routes follow the natural touring arcs from our Perth hire base: north up the A9 to the NC500, east into Fife and the East Neuk, and west down to Argyll.
Central Scotland & the A9 corridor
1. Dunkeld Fish Bar — Dunkeld, Perthshire
If you are picking up a motorhome in Perth and heading north on the A9, Dunkeld Fish Bar on Atholl Street is the obvious first stop. It sits a five-minute walk from the cathedral and the River Tay, with easy on-street parking for vans on the wider stretches near the bridge.
- What to order: the haddock supper — large, golden, properly drained, never greasy.
- Why it matters for road trippers: last serious chippy before the long pull north to Aviemore. Eat by the Tay, walk it off through Birnam Wood, then back on the A9 with the Cairngorms ahead.
- Motorhome tip: larger vans should use the long-stay car park behind the Birnam Arts Centre (2 min walk over the bridge).
2. The New Pitlochry Fish Bar — Pitlochry
Twenty minutes further up the A9, Pitlochry's go-to chippy does an excellent battered haggis supper — a useful detour if you are heading toward Glencoe or the Cairngorms and want something distinctly Scottish in the paper.
3. The Real Food Cafe — Tyndrum
Not a traditional chippy front, but the haddock-and-chips here is consistently rated one of the best in Scotland and the car park genuinely fits 6-berth motorhomes. The natural lunch stop between Loch Lomond and Glencoe on any west-coast tour.
East Neuk of Fife — the chippy capital
4. Anstruther Fish Bar — Anstruther
The most famous chippy in Scotland and a former UK champion. Queues move quickly, the haddock is landed at Pittenweem a mile away, and you eat it on the harbour wall watching the boats. Worth the detour from Perth (around 50 minutes via the M90 and A917).
- Motorhome tip: use the Waid Academy long-stay car park on the way in — the harbour-front bays are tight.
5. The Wee Chippy — Anstruther
Round the corner from its more famous neighbour and, to many locals, the better fish. Smaller queue, same fish market.
6. Cromars — St Andrews
Multiple-award winner, a polite ten-minute walk from the cathedral and West Sands beach. Cooks in beef dripping by default (vegetable oil on request) and does a proper smoked-haddock fishcake that is hard to find elsewhere.
East coast & Aberdeenshire
7. The Bay Fish & Chips — Stonehaven
Multiple UK Fish & Chip Shop of the Year winner, on the seafront at Stonehaven. Sustainable sourcing, MSC-certified haddock, and a takeaway window facing the bay so you can eat on the bench with the North Sea in front of you. Easy motorhome parking on the long promenade road.
8. Low's Traditional Fish & Chips — Aberdeen
If your route takes you into Aberdeen, Low's on Menzies Road is the pick — proper old-school, queue out the door at 5pm, and a haddock supper that justifies the wait.
The NC500 & the far north
9. The Chippy at the Boath House layby — Nairn
First proper chippy on the NC500 if you are running anti-clockwise from Inverness. Nairn itself has a long history of fish frying — the High Street has two strong options and the harbour-side benches make a perfect early-evening stop.
10. Harbour Fish & Chips — Ullapool
You are now deep into the NC500. Ullapool is the natural overnight, and the chippy by the pier serves fish that was, in some literal cases, swimming that morning. Sit on the harbour wall, look across Loch Broom to the Summer Isles, and concede that this is what the trip was for.
11. Cocoa Mountain — Durness (honourable mention)
Not a chippy — it's hot chocolate and chocolates — but at the top of the NC500 you have earned it, and the village shop next door does perfectly respectable fish suppers if you need the full set.
West coast & Argyll
12. The Real Food Café — Tyndrum (again) and Oban Fish & Chip Shop — Oban
Oban calls itself the seafood capital of Scotland and lives up to it. The Oban Fish & Chip Shop on George Street, two streets back from the harbour, plates up monkfish, lemon sole and the standard haddock supper to a queue that snakes out the door every summer evening. Park the motorhome at the Mossfield long-stay (10 min walk) and eat by the ferry terminal.

Plan the route around the chippies
If you only have a week in a hired motorhome and want to hit as many of these as possible, the most efficient loop from Perth is:
- Day 1: Perth → Dunkeld → Pitlochry → overnight Aviemore.
- Day 2: Aviemore → Inverness → Nairn → start NC500.
- Day 3–4: Ullapool, Durness, John o' Groats.
- Day 5: Drop back to Stonehaven via the A90 — Bay Fish & Chips for dinner.
- Day 6: Through Dundee to St Andrews (Cromars) and Anstruther.
- Day 7: Back to Perth for handover.

Practical tips for chippy stops in a motorhome
- Park before you queue. Coastal high streets in Scotland are narrow. Find the long-stay or supermarket car park, walk in.
- Eat outside the van. Fish supper smells linger for days in a hire motorhome's soft furnishings. The whole point is to eat on a sea wall anyway.
- Cash is rarely needed. Every shop on this list takes contactless in 2026.
- Closing times. Most close 8–9pm even in summer. Don't roll into Ullapool at 9:30 expecting dinner.
- Salt & sauce vs salt & vinegar. Edinburgh asks for "salt and sauce" (brown sauce thinned with vinegar). North of the Forth, salt and vinegar is the default.
