Under £15,000 you are mainly looking at older panel-van conversions — Transit, Transporter T4 and T5, Vivaro and Trafic — with a hob, sink and a bed that folds away. Between £15,000 and £35,000 the market opens up to newer conversions with a fixed bed, diesel heating, a leisure battery and solar. Above that you are into coachbuilt motorhomes with a washroom and fixed berths for four or more.

Under £15,000 usually means an older high-mileage panel van conversion or a small day van: fine for weekends, expect to spend on tyres, habitation seals and a leisure battery. £15,000–£30,000 is the bulk of the market — solid VW, Ford and Renault conversions and older coachbuilts with fitted kitchens, heating and proper beds. Above £30,000 you are into recent conversions and low-mileage motorhomes with warranty left.

Mileage matters less than damp. A 150,000-mile van with a dry, sound habitation area and a service history is a far better buy than an 80,000-mile van with soft floor corners or a stained ceiling. Get a damp reading before you hand money over, and check the habitation electrics work on both hook-up and battery.
