Where you collect, and how far it gets you
Our own campervans go out from Perth in central Scotland (PH1 2UR), which is deliberately chosen: Edinburgh and Glasgow are both around 75 minutes away, Inverness and the NC500 start line about two hours up the A9, Glencoe and the road to Skye roughly two and a half. Collecting in the middle of the country means you are not burning the first and last day of a week's holiday driving out of a city.

What a week really costs in Scotland
Low season (November to March) starts at £495 a week. April, May, September and October sit around £649–£795. Peak June to August runs £995–£1,295 depending on berth count. Those are full prices — 1,000 free miles, comprehensive insurance for two drivers, RAC breakdown cover, gas, bedding, kitchen kit and a full tank of fuel are all in, with no cleaning or admin fee bolted on at handover.
Budget separately for campsites, roughly £20–£40 a night for a hook-up pitch, and fuel: a fortnight's NC500 plus Skye trip typically covers 900–1,200 miles. Ferries to Mull, Islay or the Outer Hebrides are booked directly with CalMac and cost more for a campervan than a car, so book those early in summer.
Two berth, four berth or six berth
Couples are almost always happiest in a 2-berth: easier on single-track Highland roads, easier to park at Applecross or the Quiraing, cheaper to run. Families of four want a 4-berth with a fixed bed so nobody is making up a double every night. Six berths suit two couples or larger families, but check width before committing to the narrowest NC500 sections.
Heating matters more in Scotland than berth count. Any van you hire outside June to August should have a proper night heater, and it is worth asking what happens if the weather turns — see our winter and off-season pages for how shoulder-season trips actually run.
Overnight parking, honestly
Scotland's access rights cover walkers and lightweight backpack camping, not motor vehicles. In a campervan you should use campsites, aires or designated overnight parking, follow local signage and byelaws — parts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs operate a seasonal camping permit scheme — and ask permission where land is private.
