Winter can offer quieter Scottish campervan trips, but conditions and costs vary. Short days, closed campsites, storms and icy roads need careful planning. Choose a short route with confirmed overnight stops and be willing to change or postpone it if conditions are unsuitable.
Is it a good idea to tour Scotland by campervan in winter?
Yes, if you plan for it. From November to February expect 7 to 8 hours of daylight, frequent rain and occasional snow or ice on high roads. Use a campervan with a diesel or gas heater, book campsites that open all year, keep daily driving under about 100 miles and check Traffic Scotland before crossing high passes such as the A93 or A939.
Plan around daylight
In December the sun rises around 8:45am and sets before 3:45pm in Perth, and earlier further north. Drive in daylight, arrive at your pitch before dark and plan one main activity per day.
Shorter loops work best: Perthshire and Loch Tay, the Cairngorms, Glencoe and Fort William, or Fife and St Andrews are all within about two hours of Perth.
Staying warm and powered
Confirm the vehicle has suitable installed heating, adequate bedding and sufficient battery capacity. Electric hook-up can help, but does not power every heating system: ask the operator how this vehicle works.
Keep permanent ventilation clear and follow the heater instructions. Test the carbon-monoxide alarm at handover. Never use a stove, barbecue or portable outdoor heater inside the vehicle, and keep drying gear away from heaters.
Roads, ice and snow
Main routes such as the A9 and M90 are gritted, but high roads including the A93 at Glenshee, the A939 Cockbridge to Tomintoul and the Bealach na Bà can close. Check Traffic Scotland and the Met Office before setting off.
Carry a scraper, de-icer, a shovel, warm layers, water and snacks. Keep the fuel tank above half, as rural fuel stations may close early.
Where to stay
Many campsites close from November to March, but plenty stay open all year. Book ahead, as winter-open sites are fewer. Scotland's access rights do not give a right to park a vehicle overnight anywhere; use campsites or places where overnight parking is clearly allowed.
Winter kit worth packing
Thermal layers, a waterproof jacket, head torches, a thermos and a small dehumidifier or moisture traps make the biggest difference.
