What a winter-ready campervan actually needs

Winter touring in Scotland is comfortable in the right vehicle and miserable in the wrong one. The essentials are a diesel or gas blown-air heater that runs off the leisure battery overnight, insulated window blinds or thermal screens, a leisure battery large enough for short daylight hours with limited solar input, and a fresh-water system you can drain down if temperatures stay below freezing.

Where to go between October and March

Perthshire and the Cairngorms are the strongest winter base: Aberfeldy, Pitlochry, Dunkeld and Blair Atholl all have year-round facilities, and the A9 is gritted and driven daily. From Perth you are 90 minutes from Edinburgh and Glasgow airports and around two hours from Aviemore for snow and winter walking.

The North Coast 500 is doable in winter but treat it as a slower, shorter trip: daylight in December is roughly 9am to 3.30pm, some seasonal campsites and fuel stops close, and Applecross's Bealach na Bà is frequently shut by snow. Many winter visitors run a Perth to Inverness to Ullapool to Torridon loop instead, which keeps you on well-maintained roads.

The west coast is milder and greener than the interior. Oban, Fort William, Glencoe and Loch Lomond stay accessible through most of the winter and reward you with genuinely empty lochside pitches.

Winter driving and overnight rules

Check Traffic Scotland before crossing high passes such as the A93 at Glenshee, the A82 through Glencoe and the A9 north of Drumochter. Carry a shovel, de-icer, a warm sleeping bag as backup and more food than you plan to eat. Fill up with fuel before remote sections rather than after them.

Scotland's access rights cover walking and wild camping on foot — they do not cover parking a campervan overnight wherever you like.
