If you have never hired a campervan before, Scotland is a great place to start, with clear roads, plenty of campsites and short distances between beautiful places. This guide covers the basics so your first trip feels easy.
What do first-time campervan hirers in Scotland need to know?
Most campervans can be driven on a standard car licence. Allow no more than about 150 miles a day, use passing places on single-track roads to let others by, book campsites in summer and remember that Scotland's access rights do not allow a vehicle to park overnight anywhere. Perth is a practical start, around two hours from Inverness and 90 minutes from the Edinburgh and Glasgow airports.
Driving a campervan
A campervan drives much like a large car or van. Allow extra braking distance, watch height barriers and take bends gently. Most vehicles under 3,500kg can be driven on a standard UK car licence; check your licence category if you passed after 1997.
Single-track roads
Much of the Highlands has single-track roads with passing places. Pull into a passing place on your left, or wait opposite one on your right, to let oncoming traffic or faster vehicles pass. Never park in them.
Where to sleep
Campsites give you electric hook-up, showers, water and waste disposal. In summer, book ahead in popular places such as Skye and the NC500. Informal overnight parking is only acceptable where it is clearly allowed.

A 5 to 7 day loop from Perth through Pitlochry, the Cairngorms, Inverness, Glencoe and Loch Lomond gives you mountains, lochs and castles without long single-track sections.
