Perth sits at the meeting point of the main roads north, west and into the Cairngorms, so a Highlands campervan trip does not need to begin with a long drive from southern Britain. Choose one region and travel slowly: the Cairngorms for short drives and walking, Loch Ness for an easy first tour, or Glencoe and the west coast for bigger scenery.

Where is the best place to start a Highlands campervan trip?
Perth is a practical central starting point for the Scottish Highlands, with direct access north on the A9 towards Pitlochry, Aviemore and Inverness, or west on the A85 towards Crianlarich, Oban and Glencoe. A seven-day loop can combine the Cairngorms, Loch Ness and Glencoe.
Cairngorms loop
Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Aviemore and Deeside make a manageable first Highlands circuit with frequent services.
Loch Ness and the Great Glen
Continue from Aviemore to Inverness, then follow the A82 beside Loch Ness towards Fort William.
Glencoe and Lochaber
Allow time for weather and walking around Fort William, Glen Nevis and Glencoe rather than treating the A82 as a through road.
West-coast extension
Oban, Arisaig or Wester Ross can extend the route when time and conditions allow; reserve accommodation or campsites in peak periods.
