How do I know if my car can tow a caravan?
Check your car's maximum towing weight in the handbook or on the VIN plate, and make sure the caravan's maximum laden weight is below it. For stability, many towing experts suggest keeping the loaded caravan at or below 85% of the car's kerb weight. Since December 2021, most UK car licence holders can tow a trailer up to 3,500kg MAM. Towing mirrors are required if the caravan is wider than the car's view.

Look in the handbook or on the VIN plate for the gross train weight and the maximum braked trailer weight. Never exceed either.
The 85% guideline
The 85% guide is advice rather than law. Keeping the caravan's loaded weight at or below 85% of the car's kerb weight helps stability, especially for less experienced towers.
Licence rules
Since 16 December 2021, drivers with a standard car licence in Great Britain can tow a trailer up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass. Always check your own licence for any restrictions.
Kit you need
Towing mirrors, a correctly fitted towbar with the right electrics, and a nose weight gauge are essential.
