Caravan hire and caravan rental are the same thing

People search for this in a dozen different ways — caravan hire, caravan rental, rent a caravan, caravan for rent, hire a tourer. They all mean the same holiday: a touring caravan you use for a week or two without owning one. Everything on this page applies whichever phrase you used to get here.

Two formats exist. Site-delivered rental means the caravan is towed to a campsite for you, levelled, hooked up and handed over — you turn up in your own car with your bags and no towing experience at all. DIY tow rental means you collect it and tow it yourself, which costs roughly 20–35% less and lets you move pitch mid-week.

What a week's caravan rental actually costs

Off-peak (October to March, outside school holidays) a 2-berth DIY-tow tourer starts around £165 a week and a 4-berth around £210. Peak summer weeks, Easter, half-terms and bank holidays typically add 30–50%. Site-delivered rental usually runs £210–£320 a week for a 4-berth inside a 30-mile delivery radius, and longer bookings are often discounted.

Campsite pitch fees are separate and paid to the site, normally £18–£40 a night depending on region and season. A fair rental should already include insurance, breakdown cover, a full gas bottle, hook-up cable, awning, kitchen kit and bedding — always confirm awning and bedding, because some operators charge for both.

Renting before buying

Renting two or three different layouts before you spend £15,000 on a tourer is the cheapest research money you will ever spend. Fixed bed versus made-up double, end washroom versus side washroom, single axle versus twin — a week in each tells you more than any brochure. Towing a hired caravan: licence and weights

Anyone who passed a UK car test from 1 January 1997 can now tow a trailer or caravan up to 3,500kg without the old B+E test, so most family tourers are legal on a standard licence. What still matters is the match: the loaded caravan should stay under 85% of your car's kerbweight if you are new to towing, and never above the car's legal towing limit or noseweight.

Check three numbers before you book — your car's kerbweight and towing limit (both on the V5C or door plate), and the caravan's MTPLM. Any decent hire operator will run that check with you, and if the match is wrong they should offer a lighter van or site delivery instead of waving it through. Extended mirrors are a legal requirement while towing.

Where caravan rental is easiest to get

Availability is strongest around the big holiday-park regions — the Yorkshire coast, Lake District fringes, Norfolk, Devon and Cornwall, North Wales, and central Scotland. School holidays and the late-May and August bank holidays go first, often three to four months ahead; if you can travel midweek in June or September you will pay noticeably less and have a real choice of layouts.
