Where should an NC500 campervan hire trip start?
Inverness is the traditional start of the 516-mile North Coast 500. From Caledonian Tourers’ Perth base, Inverness is around two hours north on the A9, making Perth a practical collection point for a 7–10 day clockwise or anticlockwise circuit.
Inverness and the Black Isle
Start with fuel and supplies, then look for dolphins at Chanonry Point before heading north.
Dornoch to John o’Groats
Allow time for Dunrobin Castle, the Caithness coast and the short walk to Duncansby Stacks.
Durness and the north coast
Smoo Cave, Balnakeil and the exposed north-coast roads reward a slow day rather than a long mileage target.
Ullapool, Torridon and Applecross
The west is the most demanding section. Use passing places properly and take the coastal alternative if the Bealach na Bà does not suit your vehicle or the weather.
A sensible NC500 schedule
Seven days is the practical minimum for the loop; nine or ten gives room for weather, walking and two-night stops. Book formal overnight sites in the busiest months and never use passing places for parking.
A week's 1,000-mile allowance can cover the core loop and the journey from Perth, but total mileage depends on detours. Check the allowance and your planned route before setting off.
When to go
May, June and September usually provide the best balance of daylight and manageable traffic. July and August are busiest. Outside summer, confirm campsites and fuel stops are open and check road conditions before remote sections.
