The UK has 11,000 miles of coastline, sheltered sea lochs on almost every western island, and inland water on Loch Lomond, Ullswater and the Norfolk Broads that ranks among the finest paddling in Europe. But sea temperatures rarely climb above 15 °C and Atlantic swell can build fast — sea kayaking demands proper kit. A true sea kayak (16–18 ft, skeg or rudder, sealed bulkheads) is what you want for anything more than a mile from shore — P&H Cetus MV, Valley Nordkapp LV and NDK Explorer are the three UK benchmarks in the £2,400–£3,200 bracket. Touring kayaks (13–15 ft, lighter) suit inland lochs and calm coastal days. Sit-on-tops are for warm summer days on sheltered water only — do not take them offshore. Buy the boat for the worst day you'll paddle, not the average.
A carbon paddle weighs 700–850 g. An entry-level aluminium/plastic paddle weighs 1.2 kg. Multiply the extra 400 g by 60 strokes a minute over four hours and you've lifted an extra 5.7 tonnes — that's where shoulder tendinitis comes from. A UK-legal 50 N buoyancy aid (not a life jacket — kayakers wear buoyancy aids) is non-negotiable. Palm FXr (£140), Peak PS Marine Guide (£180) and NRS cVest (£160) are the three that fit properly, have front pockets big enough for a knife, tow-line stub and phone in a dry-pouch, and don't ride up when you self-rescue. Try before you buy; every UK kayak shop expects you to.
October to May, a drysuit is not optional if you're paddling offshore in the UK. Kokatat Meridian GORE-TEX Pro (£1,400) is the gold standard. Palm Cascade (£850) is the sensible mid-range. Wetsuits (3 mm long John) are fine for summer inland paddling and warm-day coastal day trips.
Marine VHF radio with DSC. Flare pack. Tow-line. Bilge pump and paddle float. Whistle. Waterproof headtorch. Split paddle stored on deck. Chart in a dry case or on a waterproof phone. File a float plan with someone on shore, confirm your ETA, and check it in when you land.
£3,000+ makes sense the moment you paddle the Small Isles, Sound of Arisaig, Summer Isles, Skye, the Outer Hebrides, or Pembrokeshire's coastal cliffs. For pond-and-canal paddling with the kids on a summer weekend, a £400 sit-on-top and £60 PFDs are more than enough.
A 16 ft sea kayak weighs 24–30 kg. Roof bars must be rated to that plus wind load — Thule WingBar Evo, Yakima JetStream and Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero handle it safely. Add proper kayak cradles and use bow and stern lines to the car. For storage, hang the boat from padded slings on a garage wall, never on its ends.

On the sea, no. On inland waterways in England and Wales you need British Canoeing membership or a Canal & River Trust licence. In Scotland, statutory access rights allow paddling on virtually all inland water without a licence.
Only on warm, calm days within 200 m of a sheltered shore. For any offshore paddling in UK conditions, use a proper sea kayak with a drysuit and PFD.
A buoyancy aid (50 N) helps you swim in the water and doesn't restrict paddling movement. Kayakers wear buoyancy aids because active self-rescue matters more than passive flotation.
Twenty to thirty years with basic care — hosed after saltwater, stored out of UV, and re-gelcoated every ten years.
Legally yes, safely only if you're a competent paddler with VHF, file a float plan and stick to conditions well within your skill.
