T5 vs T6 vs T6.1 — which one to chase
T5 (2003–2009): The cheapest entry into the platform. 1.9 TDI and early 2.5 TDI engines. Watch for rust on tailgate, fuel tank corrosion, and tired pump-duse injectors. Realistic price 2026: £14,000–£22,000 converted.
T5.1 (2010–2015): The sweet spot. Common-rail 2.0 TDI engine, fewer chronic faults, plenty of professional conversions on the market. Realistic price: £20,000–£32,000.
T6 (2015–2019): EU6 emissions, modern interior, ULEZ-compliant. Realistic price: £28,000–£45,000.
T6.1 (2019–on): Electric power steering, latest safety kit. Realistic price: £38,000–£65,000.
The conversions worth paying for
UK conversion brands that command resale premiums: Auto-Sleeper, Wellhouse Leisure, Danbury, Hillside Leisure, CMC Reimo, Jerba (Scotland-built and well-regarded north of the border). A factory VW California carries the strongest premium of all but limits you to one layout.
A good self-build is fine — but expect to discount 10–15% vs a professional conversion when reselling.
Pop-top, high-top, or no-top

Pop-top canvas (replacement £600–£1,200), elevating roof scissor mechanism, gas locker certification, leisure battery condition (test under load, not just voltage), hookup socket, and water tank seals. Lift the bench seat and look for rust on the seat-belt mounting points — a structural fail at MOT.
