Autumn is the best-value time of year to tour Scotland in a campervan. The midges have gone, the roads have emptied, Perthshire's woodlands turn gold, and the light lasts long enough for proper days out without July's traffic. These are the routes we send autumn customers on from our Perth base.

Where should I take a campervan in Scotland in autumn?

Perthshire is Scotland's best autumn campervan region — the Hermitage at Dunkeld, Faskally Wood at Pitlochry, the Birks of Aberfeldy and Queen's View at Loch Tummel all peak between early October and early November, and all sit within an hour of Caledonian Tourers' Perth base. Early October also brings the red deer rut in Glen Etive, Glencoe and the Cairngorms.

September and early October are the quietest sensible months for the 516-mile North Coast 500, well inside the 1,000 free miles included in a week's hire.

Perthshire: Big Tree Country in full colour

Perthshire is Scotland's autumn heartland, and it starts on our doorstep. The Hermitage at Dunkeld, Faskally Wood above Pitlochry, the Birks of Aberfeldy and Loch Tummel's Queen's View peak between the first week of October and early November. It is a four-day trip at a walking pace, with short drives between each stop.

Pitlochry's Enchanted Forest event and the salmon ladder at the dam both fall in the autumn window, and every one of these places sits within an hour of Perth — ideal for a first campervan trip or a long weekend.

The quiet NC500

September and early October are the sweet spot for the North Coast 500: enough daylight for long driving days, dry-ish weather on the north coast, and a fraction of the summer campervan traffic on the single-track sections beyond Ullapool. The full loop is 516 miles, comfortably inside a week's 1,000 free miles even with detours to Applecross, Smoo Cave and Achmelvich.

Book campsites ahead for the first half of September — many close from mid-October, so a later trip needs a checked, confirmed list of what is still open.

Wildlife and the rut

Late September to late October is red deer rutting season. Glen Etive, Glencoe, the Cairngorms and Torridon all give you a genuine chance of hearing stags roaring from a layby at dawn. Keep well back, stay in or beside the van and never approach a rutting stag.

Autumn is also the strongest season for pine marten, red squirrel and geese arriving on the Solway and the Tay estuary — birdwatching within twenty minutes of Perth.

Practicalities for an autumn trip

Nights get cold before days do: expect single figures by late September in the glens, so a van with working blown-air heating matters more than air conditioning. Bring waterproofs, midge-free confidence, a head torch and a plan for shorter evenings.
